Queen Elizabeth the 1st By Bonnie
Yesterday we were each assigned to reaserch a important person in the history of England. I choose to do Queen Elizabeth the 1st. Queen Elizabeth was born to King Henry the 8th and his second wife Jane Boleyn. King Henry was not happy with a daughter as his sucessor and he wanted his wife to have a son. When Jane Boleyn could not have a son King Henry the 8th charged her with treason and withcarft and had her beheaded. Because of this Elizabeth lost her title as princess and her place in the line of sucession at the age of only 2 years old. years later King Henry's final wife got Elizabeth and her father reaquainted after she had moved away and Elizabeth was given back her title and her place in the line of sucession after Prince Edward. Soon after this King Henry the 8th died and Prince Edward now King Edward took the throne. At the age of 15 King Edward died due to poor health from birth, Queen Elizabeth by her father's wishes should have taken the throne but instead Lady Jane did because it said that that was what King Edward wished in his will. After only 2 weeks of ruling Queen Jane was deposed and Elizabeth rode to London with her half sister Mary to see who would take the throne. Mary, Elizabeth's half sister, wished to marry the King of Spain to gain more favor with the Catholics. Because of this the Wyatt rebellion was started and because Elizabeth played a role in it she was sent to the tower of London. Elizabeth was to be beheaded but to many English men did not wish to kill her because she was part of the rare Tudor Dynasty. So instead she was put under house arrest. Eventually Mary took the throne and was known as Bloody Mary because she killed almost 300 protistents. Mary died before she had any hiers and so finally Elizabeth took the throne. It is said that people rejoiced in the streets when Queen Mary took the throne, and poems and plays were written declaring Queen Elizabeth's bueaty. The period in which Elizabeth ruled was know as the Elizabethian era. At the time that she ruled England she also ruled France and Ireland. She ruled these countries from the day of her coronation on January 15th, 1558 to her death in March of 1603, 45 years. At the time that she died she was the oldest ruler of England to ever live. Because of her philosphy and religion she had peace with France but she was not popular in Ireland. During the time that she was at war with Spain a rebellion broke out in Ireland. Though Queen Elizabeth tried to make a peace war broke out. During the time that England was at war with Ireland Queen Elizabeth passed away due to fatigue and insomnia. Just days after her death England surrendered with Ireland. She is remebered to have stated in her ast hours that she had sent " Wolves, not Sheperads, to Ireland because they have left me nothing to govern but sheep and carcuses." Queen Elizabeth got many of her looks from her mother such as her figure, black eyes, face, and her charecteristics such as stuborness, gentle, and politness however she got her love of ruling and auburn hair from her father. Queen Elizabeth was buried in Westminster Abby next to her half sister Mary. Inscribed in latin on thier grave it said " Partners both in throne and grave, here we rest two sisters Elizabeth and Mary, in hope of one ressurection. Queen Elizabeth never married and was know as the Virgin Queen, Gloriana, or Good Queen Bess. Nobody knows for sure why she never married though some think that it was because of the tragic death of her mother due to marriage. Many others believe that she loved Sir Robert Dudley who was head of the Queen's Horses and when he died she could not bring herself to marry anyone else. The most likely reason is that she never married because she did not want to share the power of the crown. It is certian that is she had married it would have cost her alot of money and power over her estates which until then she wouuld have had complete control over. The state of Virginia was named after her because she was know as the " Virgin" queen. Queen Elizabeth turned out to be the best Queen that Egland had ever had. She was voted the 7th best Britian in the 100 great Britians survey in 2006. She placed higher then any other monarch. A group of historians on the discovery channel voted her the best British ruler ever though not everyone loves her. Some historians take a dispassionate and negative view on her riegn. One thing is certian- She was much needed guidance and support for England in a time of major change.
